The Centre offers a range of
Skills classes for 15- 18 year old students. These are
students who are unable, for a variety of reasons, to continue with
their education after Grade 9.
Our aim is to give these
students basic skills which they can then use to obtain employment
within the community. The range at the moment is small, as we
do not have the facilities or staff to expand.
GETS is maintaining the
classes, Sewing, Cooking, Tie and Dye, English and Maths, which were run at the Centre prior to our takeover.
If we can raise the funding to extend the skills classrooms we
would like to expand to provide more classes such as IT, hair and
beauty, plumbing and carpentry.
We are investigating the
registration of the Centre so that we can provide officially
recognised qualifications for our students - similar to NVQ in the
UK.
Students asked if we could help them to find work experience as part of their courses.
This has been done for the cookery and sewing classes and all Year 3 students undertake work experience at restaurants, hotels
and dress-makers in the Senegambia
region. 11 of last year's students were offered permanent employment as a
result of these work placements. In addition, we have also employed
one of last year's graduating students as an assistant to help the
teachers in our nursery classrooms.
A Bantaba has being built
to give the students a shady area to work away from the
classrooms. This has been generously funded by a GETS member.
